| EEG | electroencephalogram, measures the electrical activity of the brain and tracks brain waves during different stages of rest. |
| Alpha waves | represent a state of relaxed wakefulness, acting as the bridge between active thinking and deep rest. They are most prominent when you are calm, meditating, or sitting quietly with your eyes close - very early NREM-1 |
| Delta waves | Slowest frequency of all major brainwaves and delta waves represent a brain that has completely shut down for repairs. Hallmark of NREM Stage 3 |
| Sleep Stage 1 - if woken it doesn't feel like you never actually slept. | NREM-1 early stages only lasts 1/5 minutes. absolute lightest stage of sleep, serving as the fragile boundary between being awake and falling asleep. VItals drop, eyes roll, muscles lose tone and go limp. Hypnic Jerks and Hypnogogic hallucinations. |
| Sleep Stage 2 - 10-60 minutes | True baseline of sleep cycle. Sleep spindles which sudden, high-frequency bursts of brain activity blocking outside noises and crucial for neuroplasticity and moving short-term memories into permanent storage. K-Comp- suppress arousal+long mem. and volt |
| Sleep Stage 3 - 20-40 | Deep sleep. It is the most physically restorative phase of your sleep cycle and has Delta waves. Tissue repair, immune boost. Difficult to wake up and disorientation (sleep inertia) - sleepwalking and night terrors. bc brain tries to go from heavy to l. |
| REM and Rebound - paradoxical bc mind is active | 90 minutes to cycle through NREM stages before reaching a brief period of REM sleep. vivid dreaming. restoring cognitive balance, May wake up feeling physically exhausted. Memory consolidation short into stable, long-term memories. |
| NREM sleep -10/60 minutes | Non-rapid eye movement which include slow breathing and irregular brain waves |
| Hypnic Jerk | Sudden, involuntary body twitch or "falling sensation". If muscles relax too quickly the brain's motor system misinterpret this sudden drop in muscle tone as a sign that you are physically falling. |
| Activation synthesis theory of dreaming | theory argues that dreams are not deeply coded psychological messages from the subconscious. Instead, they are simply the conscious mind's attempt to make sense of random brain activity happening while you sleep. |
