List 9B Vocabulary

TermDefinition
imagery Descriptive language that appeals to the five senses (sight, sound, smell, taste, or touch).
setting The time and place in which a story takes place.
climax The highest point of tension or excitement in a story; usually the moment when the main conflict reaches its turning point.
diction An author's choice of words, especially the way those words create a particular tone or feeling.
metaphor A comparison between two unlike things that does not use “like” or “as.”
simile A comparison between two unlike things using “like” or “as.”
personification Giving human qualities or actions to something that is not human.
paradox A statement that seems contradictory or impossible but reveals a truth. Example - less is more
situational irony When the opposite of what is expected happens.
dramatic irony When the audience or reader knows something that a character does not know.
verbal irony When someone says something but means the opposite, often for humor or emphasis.
symbolism When an object, person, place, or action represents a deeper meaning or idea.
motif A repeated image, idea, symbol, word, or situation that helps develop a theme or meaning.
