History Ch. 3

Everything from the review sheet

TermDefinition
Scientifically, what holds the solar system together? sun's gravity
Biblically, what holds the solar system together? God
What are the two ways the Earth moves? rotation and revolution
Describe how the Earth rotates. on an axis of 23 1/2 degrees
What is the shape of the Earth's orbit? Elliptical
Explain why Earth gets equinoxes and solstices. The Earth gets equinoxes and solstices because of the 23 1/2 degree tilt.
Explain when Earth gets equinoxes and solstices. Equinoxes in the spring (March 20) and fall (September 22 or 23). Solstices in the summer (June 21) and winter (December 21 or 22).
Do all latitude zones have four seasons? Why or why not? No, because only the temperate zones experience all four seasons.
What causes seasons? The slant of the sunlight and the tilt of the earth's axis
Name the three latitude zones. What are the bounds of each? Provide a brief description of each. Tropics 0 to 23.5 degrees, closest to Earth, continent warm temperatures. Temperate 23.5 to 66.5 degrees, experiences all 4 seasons with moderate temperatures. Polar 66.5 to 90 degrees, located top and bottom cold winters and cool summers.
What are the five basic elements of weather? Temperature, atmospheric pressure, wind, precipitation, and humidity
Name the tools and measurement unit used to measure the elements of weather. Temperature is measured with a thermometer and uses units of Fahrenheit and Celsius. Atmospheric pressure is measured with a barometer and uses the unit inHG.
how do you determine if the air mass is warm or cool? A warm air mass should be warmer than the surface. A cold air mass should be colder than the surface.
Where are the permanent air masses located? Warm air masses are over the tropics while cold air masses over the polar.
Name one of three different wind belts on Earth. Where does it come from and what does it do? Trade winds come from the northeast to the southeast and are famous from constant warm winds.
Name another wind belt. Where does it come from and what does it do? Prevailing westerlies have warm air from the tropics and have winds from the temperate zones.
Name the last wind belt. Where does it come from and what does it do? Polar easterlies bring cold air from the poles and travel from east to west.
Explain the hydrologic cycle. The water cycle applied to weather
What is precipitation? In what forms could we see it? Concentrated water droplets falling to the earth. Frozen and liquid.
Explain the difference between absolute humidity and relative humidity. Absolute humidity is amount of water vapor in the air. Relative humidity is total amount compared to maximum that could be at current temperature.
What is the dew point? the point at which water vapor begins to condense
How do oceans current move? Why does the Earth needs this. move in a circular patterns to balance temperatures all over the world.
What happens when warm and cold air masses meet? It creates precipitation
Explain how convection occurs in weather and what comes along with it. When a large air mass forms when the land cools at night and then heats up rapidly under the summer sun. It comes with the rise of warm air.
What is the difference between climate and weather? Climate is the average weather in an area over an extended period of time. Weather is the condition in the atmosphere at a given time.
Which one of the climate zone is warm and wet, near the equator, has lush vegetation, and has lots of insects and animals? Tropical rainy
Which one of the climate zone is anywhere that gets less than 10in of precipitation, lack of moisture? Dry (desert)
Which one of the climate zone is in other words an African grasslands? Dry (semiarid)
Which one of the climate zone receives over 50in of rain and has the richest farmland? Humid subtropical
Which one of the climate zone has adequate but irregularly rainfall, and cold winters? Humid continental
Which one of the climate zone has very little rainfall int he summer, but requires irrigation for crops? Mediterranean
Which one of the climate zone receives warm, moist air from ocean currents and gets heavier rainfall in winter than summer? Marine west coast
Which one of the climate zone has giant ice blocks, allowing nothing to grow? Icecaps
Which one of the climate zone has very little plant growth, with a brief period in summer? Polar
Which one of the climate zone allows evergreens to grow but still have bitterly cold winters? Subpolar
What are different ways that a climatologist works? They use graphs called climographs. They collect data and interpret past and future climates. they then use that data to observe patterns that might indicate increases in violent storms or severe weather.
What is the difference between the land on the windward side of a mountain and the leeward side? the windward received wind from bodies of water and oceans. the leeward side experience rain shadow, less vegetation, and less inhabited.
what are the three categories of biomes? forests, grasslands, and wastelands
what does a biotic map show? A biotic map shows what kinds of plants live in a zone
What are the four questions to ask about climate change? Is the earth warming?, If so, are people causing it to warm?, If it is warming because of human activity, is that bad?, Will solutions that political leaders and scientists suggest fix the problem?
