Sevelamer is The non-calcium phosphate binder, but can interfere with other meds.
Calcium acetate phosphate binder, but can cause hypercalcemia
sx of hypercalcemia nausea constipation decreased reflexes confusion palpitations dysrhythmias
sx of hyperkalemia peaked t waves, widening qrs, cardiac arrest
spironolactone can run risk of hyperkalemia since it spares potassium
Polystyrene sulfate is used to lower elevated potassium, exchanges sodium for potassium in the GI tract, avoid with bowel obstruction patients.
Potassium chloride is used for hypokalemia, pharmacy will dilute. THis is a high alert med.
