Colonizing Georgia

TermDefinition
Highland Scots A group of settlers who came to help defend Georgia from Spanish invaders
Malcontents Early immigrants to Georgia, mostly Scots
Salzburgers German-speaking settlers from Austria who were early immigrants to Georgia
Buffer A protected area along the frontier to defend more settled areas
Charter A legal document that grants certain rights or privileges. A document passed by the state legislature creating a city and spelling out its boundaries, form of government, and powers.
Colony A territory on foreign soil claimed, settled, and controlled by another country.
Mercantilism A trade policy based on the idea that a country should sell more to other countries than it buys from them, in order to increase its wealth
Royal colony A colony set up and run by the British government in the 1600s and 1700s.
Founding The creation and initial settlement of a colony or territory
Trustees The 21 individuals named by King George II in 1732 to govern the new colony of Georgia. They were to act on behalf of others without personally benefiting.
