| Analogous Structures | Different structures that have the same function such as a bird wing, butterfly wing, and a bat wing |
| Conservation of Design | The idea that an intelligent Creator designed a flexible general plan, which could be adapted for different animals |
| Homologous Structures | Structures that are similar in construction but have different functions such as a human hand, what flipper, and a bat wing |
| Vestigial structure | A structure that does not appear to have any use and that is often presumed to be a leftover |
| Cladistics | Another name for the process of phylogenetic analysis |
| Cladogram | Another name for a phylogenetic tree |
| parsimony | the selection of one cladogram out of many that requires the fewest evolutionary changes |
| Phylogenetic analysis | the process of grouping organisms based on multiple shared characteristics or traits that were not shared with organisms thought to have been their ancestors |
| Phylogenetic Tree | Graphic of the phylogenetic analysis used to see how animals are related |
| Systematics | The classification system used presently to classify organisms |
