TermDefinition
plot the flow of the story from beginning to middle to end, the chain of events
exposition first part of the plot
exposition characters, setting, and problems are revealed
setting time and place that the story takes place, part of the exposition
inciting incident the event that sets the story in motion and makes the rest of the story possible
rising action main part/biggest chunk of the story
rising action where the complications arise
rising action moves the plot of the story along
complications problems that arise as a character struggles to reach their goals
protagonist main character of the story - the character with a problem
antagonist the character or force in conflict with the protagonist (working against them)
climax the OMG! moment in the story
climax the most exciting or intense part for the protagonist
climax usually a turning point - there is no going back from this moment, things will never be the same
falling action events that follow the climax and move the story towards the resolution
resolution the end of the story
resolution questions are finally answered, conflicts are resolved, and loose ends are wrapped up
