Personality Disorders

Cluster A - “Odd or eccentric” cluster and includes paranoid, schizoid, and schizotypal personality disorders. -Distorted Thinking - Common features for individuals with these disorders include social awkwardness and social withdrawal.
Paranoid Personality Disorder - Characterized by the essential feature of demonstrating a pervasive distrust and suspiciousness of others - These individuals typically do not allow themselves to with this disorder often have concurrent major depression, develop close relationships.
Schizoid Personality Disorder - Characterized by the essential feature of a pervasive pattern of social detachment and restricted range of emotional expressions in interpersonal settings.
Schizotypal Personality Disorder - Characterized by the pervasive pattern of social and interpersonal deficits marked by acute discomfort, reduced close relationships, cognitive or perceptual distortions, and eccentricities in behavior - Odd beliefs or “Magical Thinking”
Cluster B - Dramatic, emotional, erratic - Antisocial, Borderline PD, Histrionic, Narcissistic
Antisocial Personality Disorder - There is a pervasive pattern of disregard for and violation of the rights of others, occurring since age 15 years. - The individual is at least 18 years old. - There is evidence of conduct disorder with onset before age 15 years.
Borderline Personality Disorder A pervasive pattern of instability of interpersonal relationships, self-image, and affects, and marked impulsivity, beginning by early adulthood and present in a variety of contexts -Frantic efforts to avoid abandonment. -A pattern of unstable and intense interpersonal relationships -Identity disturbance: -Impulsivity in at least two areas that are potentially self-damaging -Recurrent suicidal behavior -Affective instability
Histrionic Personality Disorder -Excessive attention-seeking -Excessive and strong emotions -Shallow opinions -Suggestibility -Sexual provocativeness -Strong need for attention, praise, and approval
Narcissistic Personality Disorder -Need to be admired -Grandiose sense of self-importance -Sense of entitlement -Striking sense of entitlement -Sense of superiority -Self-esteem that appears strong but is actually fragile -Susceptible to depression -Envy of others -Interpersonal and Social Behavior -Lack of insight into other people's feelings and needs -Interpersonal exploitativeness is common -Interpersonal difficulties are common -Rage or indifference -Rejection and loss are common stresses
Cluster C - Anxious, Fearful - Avoidant, Dependent, Obsessive-Compulsive
Avoidant Personality Disorder -Feelings of inadequacy -Extremely sensitive to criticism -Activities are restricted to avoid embarrassment -Low self-esteem (inferiority complex) -Extreme sensitivity to rejection -Hypersensitivity to rejection -Wants companionship
Dependent Personality Disorder -Need to be taken cared of -Is submissive -Seeks reassurance from others -Rarely takes initiative and rarely disagrees with others -Cannot make decisions without an excessive amount of advice and reassurance -Folie a deux Freud: oral-dependent personality Dependence, pessimism, fear of sexuality, self-doubt, passivity, suggestibility, and lack of perseverance F>M, Young Children > Older adults
Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder Preoccupied with order and rules Perfectionist and inflexible Devoted to work, seeking little leisure time or friendship Frequently miserly or stingy Rigid and stubborn Eager to please those whom they see as powerful Constricted affect Epidemiology M>F Most often among oldest children Freud: associated with difficulties in the anal stage of psychosexual development
