Shock
Common causes, vitals, and treatment for diff shock types
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Shock is also called | Hypoperfusion |
| 4 main kinds of shock | Hypovolemic, obstructive, distributive, and cardiogenic |
| Mechanism of hypovolemic shock | fluid loss |
| Mechanism of obstructive shock | something in the way + pressure building in the chest (typically trauma causes this) |
| Mechanism of distributive shock | widespread vasoDILATION |
| Mechanism of cardiogenic shock | the heart is failing as a pump |
| What main type of shock does psychogenic fall under? | Distributive |
| What main type of shock does neurogenic fall under? | Distributive |
| What main type of shock does septic fall under? | Distributive |
| What main type of shock does anaphylactic fall under? | Distributive |
| What main type of shock does hemorrhagic fall under? | Hypovolemic |
| Septic shock | Blood vessels get "leaky" and dilate = poor perfusion |
| Cause of septic shock | Infection that spreads to the whole body |
| Neurogenic shock | Body can't send signals due to disrupted nervous system and vasodilation |
| Cause of neurogenic shock | Spinal cord injury that leads to whole body vasodilation |
| Anaphylactic shock | Immune system sends out histamines that causes vasodilation |
| Cause of anaphylactic shock | Exposure to allergen which causes severe allergic reaction which affects at least 2 body systems |
| Psychogenic shock | Stress causes nervous system reaction leading to vasodilation |
| Cause of psychogenic shock | Psychological/emotional reaction to a stressor causes the body's vessels to dilate and temporarily lose consciousness |
| Hemorrhagic shock | Loss of blood |
| Cause of hypovolemic shock | burns, blood loss, sweating, diarrhea, emesis, urination |
| Cause of distributive shock | infection, allergic reaction, emotional reaction, spinal cord injury, etc |
| Cause of obstructive shock | commonly trauma (cardiac tamponade, tension pneumothorax), but could also be things like pulmonary embolism or pericarditis |
| Cause of cardiogenic shock | Myocardial infarction (heart attack) or Congestive Heart Failure |
| Treatment for cardiogenic shock | High flow oxygen, heat blanket, and rapid transport |
| Treatment for hypovolemic shock | High flow oxygen, heat blanket, rapid transport, and calling ALS to give fluids |
| Treatment for distributive shock | High flow oxygen, rapid transport, and heat blanket |
| What type of shock do we not give a heat blanket for? | Septic shock |
| Treatment for obstructive shock | High flow oxygen, rapid transport, heat blanket, and calling ALS for interventions like finger thoracotomy or needle decompression |
| What type of shock do we give an Epi-pen? | Anaphylactic shock |
| SCTM for distributive shock | flushed/red, warm, dry |
| SCTM for obstructive shock | pale, cool, diaphoretic |
| SCTM for cardiogenic shock | pale, cool, diaphoretic |
| SCTM for hypovolemic shock | pale, cool, clammy/diaphoretic |
