Who was the leader of Persia prior to Cyrus? Achaemenes, the First Persian King
When did Cyrus overthrow his grandfather, Astyages? 550 BCE
How did Cyrus control the Median Empire? What name did it give him? He brought the lesser rulers under control, giving him the name, Cyrus the Great
How did Cyrus handle different religion and traditions? Why? Allowed much of foreign religion and traditions in order to prevent rebellions.
Explain Cyrus dealing with liberating the Jews. What did the Jews create to commemorate this? Free them and relocated them back to Israel to make a tributary state. They made a cylinder describing Cyrus' liberation to the Jews
How did Cambyses II expand the Persian Empire? He would conquer Egypt that expanded the empire.
Who claimed they were to succeed Cambyses II, what were the effects of this event? Many were to claim relation to Cambyses II, but Darius was the only one to be true. This caused chaos and had regions rebel against the rule.
Explain Darius' actions when he began to rule. He recontroled areas lost, and grow the empire more.
What is a satrapy, how did Daruis ensure that these were under control? Satrapies are districts that are overlooked by a Satrap and a Commander, these positions were appointed by Darius himself to ensure loyalty.
Daruis' rule was justified through religious rule, which religion was it and which god? The Zoroastrian god, Ahura Mazda choose him to rule the world.
What title did Daruis take onto appear non-biased to other satraps/regions of his rule? He called himself the Shahanshah, or King of Kings
What was the standardized currency used by Daruis. Daric
What are the advantages in a standard currency? It was easy to use as transactions, collect for taxes, and could be stored easier.
What was the name of the capital built on a mountainous region? Why build there? The capital Darius created was Parsa, or Persepolis. Building in a hard to reach away demonstrated his wealth and power.
Explain the Royal Road. A long road that spanned East and West of Persia, this was used for fast communication purposes; spying to lookout for rebellion.
What was another group that Royal Road provided for, how? Traders were allowed to transport goods in a both efficient and safe manner.
When did the Araemenid power start to fall and why? Ionia Greek city-states, rebelled against the rule
