| Metaphor | compares two unlikely things. is comparisons. He IS a monkey. |
| Simile. | metaphor but uses "like" or "as". hungry as a wolf |
| personification | give human qualities to an animal, object or an abstract idea. |
| hyperbole | exaggerating to make emphasis on a statement. |
| onomatopoeia | words which literally are meant to sound like objects or actions. example: explosions being kaboom. |
| euphemism | a "softer" way of saying something that softens the blow of the original harsh statement. instea dof she died its she passed on. |
| assonance | the repeption of vowels (not necesarily at the beginning of words). |
| paradox | a seeminly contradictory statement, which actually makes sense or contains some truth |
| anaphora | the repetition of a word or phrase (different than repetion) |
| alliteration | the repetition of the same letter or sound at the beginning of adjacent words. |
| synedoche | a figure of speech in which a part is used to represent the whole. or the whole for a part. |
| pun | a dad joke/a play on words sometimes diff meaning of same word. |
| oxymoron | two words often used together that mean the opposite to describe smth. bittersweet, deafening silence. |
| allusion | a refrence to smth famous. e.g. hes romantic like romeo. |
| irony | when something is said and goes against itself. sarcasm in other words but often more accidental. |
| analogy | a comparison between two things to make a similarity between to seemingly very different things often very poetic. a sword is a weapon of warrior, pen is weapon of poet. |
| imagery | painting pictures with words, apeals to the 5 senses. |
