8th grade IPC Scientific Method Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Quantitative Observations Observations using numbers or measurements
Variable Any factor that influences the outcome of an experiment or changes an experiment.
Inference A logical conclusion based on observations, previous knowledge, and available information
Qualitative Observations Observations using the five senses
Scientific Model Useful simplification used to make it easier to understand things that might be too difficult to directly observe.
Controlled Experiment An investigation in which the factors that influence the outcome are kept the same except for one the factor being studied
Hypothesis A possible, testable explanation for an observation
Scientific Theory A well tested explanation of a phenomenon in the natural world
Scientific Law A well tested description of a phenomenon in the natural world that often includes mathematical terms
Technology Use or application of scientific knowledge to solve practical problems and improve people’s lives
Constant A factor in an experiment that is kept the same across all experimental groups
Independent variable The variable that is intentionally changed or manipulated by the researcher in an experiment
Dependent variable The variable that is measured or observed in an experiment to see if it is affected by the independent variable
Data The information collected during an experiment or observation
Conclusion A statement summarizing the findings of an experiment or investigation
Scientific Method A systematic approach to research.
Science A system of knowledge and the process used to find that knowledge
