6th Scientific Method Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Scientific Method A systematic approach to research involving observation, forming a hypothesis, experimentation, data collection & analysis, and drawing a conclusion
Hypothesis A testable explanation to answer a question or solve a problem. . It's may be proven wrong through experimentation.
Observation Information that is gathered through the senses (sight, smell, touch, taste, hearing) OR through scientific instruments.
Qualitative observation An observation made using the five senses
Quantitative observation: An observation made using measurements and scientific instruments, containing numbers.
Inference An explanation or interpretation , based on an observation, It may or may not be correct
Constant A step-by-step procedure designed to test a hypothesis, usually including an independent and dependent variable.
Experiment A factor in an experiment that is kept the same across all experimental groups.
Independent Variable:. The variable that is intentionally changed by the researcher in an experiment.
Dependent Variable: The variable that is measured or observed in an experiment to see if it is affected by the independent variable.
Data The information collected during an experiment or observation, I could be qualitative or quantitative
Conclusion A statement summarizing the findings of an experiment or investigation, often indicating whether or not the hypothesis was supported by the data
