| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Atom | The basic (and smallest) particle from which all elements are made |
| Boiling point | The temperature (100 C) at which liquid boils |
| Condense/condensation | The change of state from gas to liquid |
| Evaporate | Process by which molecules at the surface of a liquid absorb enough energy to become a gas |
| Freezing point | Temperature at which liquid changes to a solid (0 C) |
| Deposition | When a gas goes directly to a solid |
| Gas | State of matter with no definite shape or volume |
| Inert | Lacking the ability to move |
| Kinetic energy | Energy something has due to its motion |
| Liquid | State of matter that has no definite shape but has definite volume |
| Matter | Anything that has mass and takes up space |
| Melting Point | Temperature at which a solid changes to a liquid |
| Molecule | Neutral group of 2 or more atoms held together by bonds |
| Particle | Very small portion of matter |
| Particle Motion | The change of position of a particle over time |
| Phase | A distinct arrangement of particles with consistent physical or chemical properties |
| Phase Change | The transformation of matter from one state to another |
| Pressure | The force pushing on a surface divided by the area of that surface |
| Pure Substance | A substance made up of all the same types of atoms, molecules and elements |
| Qualitative | Observation made about the characteristics of something (texture, shape , etc.) |
| Quantitative | Observation made using numerical information |
| Solid | State of matter that has definite shape and volume |
| Sublimation | Solid changes directly into a gas |
| System | Way of working/organizing/doing something that follows a predictable set of rules |
| Temperature | The measure of the average kinetic energy of the particles of a substance |
| Thermal Energy | The total kinetic and potential energy of all particles of an object |
| Vapor | When a liquid or solid turns into a gas |
