Waves
| Question | Answer |

| Wave | A traveling disturbance that carries energy from one place to another |
| Sound wave | Any vibration or disturbance can be a source |
| Medium | The substance that the wave travels through, it can be a solid liquid or gas |
| Energy moves, matter doesn't | The energy of a wave moves from the source outward, the master itself does not travel with the wave |
| Transverse waves | The particles of the medium vibrate perpendicular ( at a right angle ) to the direction the wave is traveling |
| Crest | The highest point of the wave above is resting position |
| Trough | The lowest point of the wave below is resting position |
| Longitudinal waves | The particles of the medium vibrate parallel ( in the same direction ) to the direction the wave is traveling |
| Compression | the part of a longitudinal wave where the particles of the medium are crowded close together |
| Rarefaction | The part where the particles are spread apart |
| Mechanical waves | Waves that require a medium ( solid liquid gas ) to travel |
| Mechanical waves | They need particles of matter to physically bump into eachother to carry energy from one place to another |
| Mechanical waves | Sounds waves ( longitudinal ) need store or another material to travel. Waves on a rope ( transverse ) need a rope |
| Mechanical waves | They can be either longitudinal or transverse |
| Electromagnetic waves | Electromagnetic waves are made of electric energy and magnetic energy vibrating together |
| Electromagnetic waves | They are part of the electromagnetic spectrum |
| Electromagnetic waves | Waves that do not require a medium. They don't need particles to bump into eachother |
| Electromagnetic waves | Light is an electromagnetic wave. Light from the sun travels through the empty space of the solar system to reach the earth |
