Unit #1 Vocab

TermDefinition
Constitution A written set of fundamental rules that describe how a specific government is organized/run and lists people’s basic rights.
Amendment Changes or additions to the Constitution.
Legislative Branch The branch of government that makes the laws, also called Congress.
Executive Branch The branch of government that carries out and enforces the laws, also called the President.
Veto The power of the President (or a governor) to reject a law passed by Congress.
Executive Order A direct command from the President telling government agencies (like the Military or FBI) how to operate or use their resources, without needing approval from Congress.
Judicial Branch The branch of government that interprets the law and determines the constitutionality of the law, also called the court system.
Supreme Court The highest court in the United States that makes final decisions about laws and the Constitution.
Checks and Balances A system that makes sure no branch of government becomes too powerful by allowing EACH branch to limit the others.
Federalism A system where power is shared between the larger national government and the smaller State governments.
