| Autotrophs | organisms that use the sunlight or other substances to produce food * some use chlorophyll to absorb sunlight and * some bacteria convert hydrogen sulfide and carbon. |
| Heterotrophs | consume other organisms |
| Herbivore | eats only plants |
| Carnivore | eat other heterotrophs |
| Omnivores | eat both plants and other heterotrophs. |
| Detrivores | eat dead and decaying material (roadkill). They break down the materials to be used again by organisms. |
| Food Chains | simple model that shows how energy flows in an ecosystem. |
| Food Web | More complex model that represents many food chains that are interconnected to show how the energy flows through a group of organisms. |
| Ecological Pyramids | a diagram that shows the relative amounts of energy, biomass, or organisms in each level of a ecosystem. |
| Biomass | The total mass of living matter in each trophic level. |
