TermDefinition
Autotrophs organisms that use the sunlight or other substances to produce food * some use chlorophyll to absorb sunlight and * some bacteria convert hydrogen sulfide and carbon.
Heterotrophs consume other organisms
Herbivore eats only plants
Carnivore eat other heterotrophs
Omnivores eat both plants and other heterotrophs.
Detrivores eat dead and decaying material (roadkill). They break down the materials to be used again by organisms.
Food Chains simple model that shows how energy flows in an ecosystem.
Food Web More complex model that represents many food chains that are interconnected to show how the energy flows through a group of organisms.
Ecological Pyramids a diagram that shows the relative amounts of energy, biomass, or organisms in each level of a ecosystem.
Biomass The total mass of living matter in each trophic level.
