What are the differences between Vented & Unvented Fireplaces? Vented - Allows hot dangerous gases created from the Fireplace to rise & exit through a Chimney System to the outdoors Unvented - Releases acceptable noxious fumes into a livable space. Be sure to have an Oxygen Detection System (ODS)
What are the main components of a Fireplace? Smoke chamber, Smoke Shelf, Damper, Lintel, Firebox, Hearth, Hearth Extension, Ash Dump
What is creosote? A dangerous byproduct that comes from burning wood & stays until you remove it **Try to move through all 4 steps of combustion
What are the 4 stages of Combustion? 1) Moisture evaporation 2) Evaporation of Hydrocarbon compounds 3) Gas & Vapor ignition 4) Char burning
Complete combustion of wood produces water vapor, carbon dioxide, ________, & non-combustable ashes Heat
The less complete combustion is, the more ________, combustable hydrocarbons, & other gasses are left behind Carbon Monoxide
TRUE or FALSE A Fireplace insert (wood, gas, electric) can NOT be installed into an existing wood burning Fireplace for more efficiency FALSE They can be installed
How would a home inspector perform a Level 1 inspection of a Fireplace? 1) Open/close Doors 2) Open/close Chainmail 3) Open/close Damper 4) Review Firebox 5) Liner present? 6) Creosote present? ** If creosote is present always recommend a licensed Chimney Sweep with Level 2 clearance prior to closing
How would a home inspector perform a Level 2 Inspection of a Fireplace? Home inspectors cannot perform a Level 2 inspection. That is only for Chimney Sweeps
