Vital Signs (Exam 1)
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| antipyretic | Fever-reducing agent |
| apnea | Absence of spontaneous respirations. |
| axilla | The armpit |
| brachial pulse | Beating or throbbing felt over the brachial artery, usually palpated in the antecubital space. It is used to assess the quality of perfusion. |
| bradycardia | Heart rate below the expected reference range. |
| bradypnea | Respiratory rate below the expected reference range. |
| cardiac output | Volume of blood ejected by the heart ventricles in 1 minute; calculated by multiplying the stroke volume and pulse rate of the heart. |
| diastole | Relaxation phase of the cardiac cycle where the heart muscle is relaxed and the chambers of the heart fill with blood. |
| dyspnea | Sensation of difficult or labored breathing |
| hypertension | Blood pressure that is above the expected reference range. |
| hypotension | Blood pressure that is below the expected reference range. |
| Korotkoff sounds | Series of sounds created by movement of blood through partially compressed vessels during a manual blood pressure assessment |
| orthostatic hypotension | Decreased blood pressure that occurs upon standing, especially from a lying or sitting position. |
| oxygen saturation | Percentage of Hgb that is saturated with oxygen |
| pulse deficit | Difference between the apical and radial pulse rates; indicates a decrease in ventricular contraction or peripheral perfusion. |
| pulse oximetry | Measurement of the saturation of oxygen in the blood using a pulse oximeter. |
| pulse pressure | Difference between the systolic and the diastolic blood pressures |
| radial pulse | Beating or throbbing felt over the radial artery, usually palpated over the groove along the thumb side of the inner wrist. |
| S1 heart sounds | First heart sound that is heard during systole, which is produced by closure of the atrioventricular valve. |
| S2 heart sounds | Second heart sound that is heard at the beginning of diastole, which is produced by closure of the semilunar valves. |
| stethoscope | Instrument used to listen to sounds produced by the body. |
| systole | Contraction phase of the cardiac cycle. During this phase, blood is driven into the aorta and pulmonary arteries |
| tachycardia | Heart rate above the expected reference range. |
| tachypnea | Respiratory rate above the expected reference range. |
| tympanic membrane | Thin, semitransparent membrane that separates the auditory canal from the middle ear or tympanic cavity. |
| vital signs | Reflection of the body’s physiological function. This includes pulse, blood pressure, respirations, oxygen saturation, and sometimes pain level. |
