Unit 1 Topic 3
Vocab-Water
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Adhesion | That water molecules stick to other materials. |
| Cohesion | Refers to the occurrence of water sticking to other water molecules via hydrogen bonds.` |
| Polar molecule | A compound with one negatively charged side and one positively charged side is called a Polar molecule. |
| Hydrogen bond | Side with hydrogen atoms (positive charge) attracts the oxygen side (negative charge) of a different water molecule. |
| Surface tension | Water has a thin "skin" on its surface due to the water molecules sticking together. Because of this surafce tension, water tends to clump together in drops rather than spread out in a thin film. |
| Capillary action | Cohesion and Adhesion work together to allow water to travel against gravity and move up a plant stem. |
| Specific heat capacity | Is the amount of heat required to change the temperature. of a unit mass of a given substance by a unit amount (usually a degree). |
| Expansion upon freezing | An increase in volume with the same mass leads to a decrease in density. |
| Universal solvent | Water is called a universal solvent because it dissolves more substances than any other liquid. This means that whenever water goes, either the ground or through living organisms. |
