Unit 1 Topic 3 Vocab - Water
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Adhesion | Water molecules stick to other materials. |
| Cohesion | The occurrence of water sticking to other water molecules via hydrogen bonds. |
| Polar molecule | A compound with one negatively charged side and one positively charged side. |
| Hydrogen bond | The side with the hydrogen atoms (positive charge) attracts the oxygen side (negative charge) of a different water molecule to create a hydrogen bond. |
| Surface tension | Water has a thin "skin" on its surface due to the water molecules sticking together. |
| Capillary action | Cohesion and adhesion work together to allow water to travel against gravity and move up a plant stem. |
| Specific heat capacity | The amount of heat required to change the temperature of a unit mass of a given substance by a unit amount (usually a degree). |
| Expansion upon freezing | As water decreases in temperature, the molecules move away from each other. This change causes an increase in volume, which leads to its expansion upon freezing. |
| Universal solvent | Water is called the universal solvent because it dissolves more substances than any other liquid. This means that wherever water goes, either through the ground or through living organisms, it takes along valuable chemicals, minerals, and nutrients. |
