Vocab-Water
Unit 1 Topic 3
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Adhesion | Water molecules stick to other materials. |
| Cohesion | Refers to the occurrence of water sticking to the other water molecules via hydrogen bonds. |
| Polar Molecule | A compound with one negatively charged side and one positively charged side. |
| Hydrogen Bond | One side with hydrogen atoms (positive) attracts the oxygen side (negative) of a different water molecule. |
| Surface Tension | when water has a thin skin on its surface due to the water molecules sticking together. |
| Capillary Action | Water traveling against gravity moving up a plant stem. (Cohesion and adhesion work together making this happen) |
| Specific Heat Capacity | the amount of heat required to change the temperature of a unit mass of a given substance by a unit amount (usually a degree) |
| Expansion Upon Freezing | as water gets colder the molecules spread apart, this causes an increase in volume leading to expansion upon freezing. |
| Universal Solvent | Dissolves more substances than any other liquid |
