Vocab - Water
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Adhesion | the attractive force that binds dissimilar molecules, surfaces, or cells to one another. |
| Cohesion | the tendency of similar molecules to stick together, most notably seen when water molecules bond to each other through hydrogen bonds. |
| Polar molecule | a structure that has a slight positive charge on one end and a slight negative charge on the other due to an unequal sharing of electrons. |
| Hydrogen bond | a weak electrostatic attraction between a partially positive hydrogen atom and a strongly electronegative atom (like oxygen or nitrogen) on another molecule or nearby group. |
| Surface tension | he physical property of a liquid's surface—primarily water—that allows it to resist external force and act like a stretched elastic film, driven by the cohesive attraction between molecules. |
| Capillary action | the movement of a liquid through narrow spaces or tubes against gravity, driven by the combined forces of adhesion, cohesion, and surface tension. |
| Specific heat capacity | the amount of heat energy required to raise the temperature of one gram of a substance by one degree Celsius (°C). |
| Expansion upon freezing | Water expands upon freezing because its molecules form a rigid, open crystal lattice that takes up more space than liquid water. |
| Universal solvent | Water is called the "universal solvent" because it dissolves more substances than any other liquid. |
