unit 1 topic 3 vocab
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| adhesion | water molecules sticking to another material |
| cohesion | water sticking to other water molecules via hydrogen bonds |
| polar molecule | a compound with one negatively charged side and one positively charged side |
| hydrogen bond | the positive charged side of the hydrogen atoms attracts the negative charged side of the oxygen side of a different water molecule |
| surface tension | the 'skin' on the surface due to the molecules sticking together of a liquid |
| capillary action | cohesion and adhesion working together to allow water to travel against gravity and move up a plant stem |
| specific heat capacity | the amount of heat need to change the temperature of a unit mass by a unit amount (usually a degree) |
| expansion upon freezing | as it decreases in temp, the molecule move away from each other. this causes an increase in volume, which is expansion upon freezing |
| universal solvent | water is called a universal solvent because it dissolves more substances than any other liquid |
