adhesion water molecules sticking to another material
cohesion water sticking to other water molecules via hydrogen bonds
polar molecule a compound with one negatively charged side and one positively charged side
hydrogen bond the positive charged side of the hydrogen atoms attracts the negative charged side of the oxygen side of a different water molecule
surface tension the 'skin' on the surface due to the molecules sticking together of a liquid
capillary action cohesion and adhesion working together to allow water to travel against gravity and move up a plant stem
specific heat capacity the amount of heat need to change the temperature of a unit mass by a unit amount (usually a degree)
expansion upon freezing as it decreases in temp, the molecule move away from each other. this causes an increase in volume, which is expansion upon freezing
universal solvent water is called a universal solvent because it dissolves more substances than any other liquid
