Veterinary Assistant Definitions

| Vulva | the exterior part of the reproductive tract in the female |
| Whelping | giving birth (cat or dog) |
| Tomcat | male (intact) cat |
| Palpation | using hands to determine anatomy, such as palpating the abdomen to establish if an animal is pregnant |
| Queening | giving birth (cat only) |
| Estrous Cycle | hormonal cycle that controls reproduction |
| Heat | period of sexual reproductivity |
| Distemper | causes pneumonia and seizures, transmitted through contact with secretions from an infected dog's nose, treatment is difficult and most die (canine vaccine) |
| Parvovirus | causes vomiting and diarrhea, transmitted through exposure to contaminated feces, treatment is intensive, older dogs survive, mainly puppy disease (canine vaccine) |
| Hepatitis | causes fever, vomiting and diarrhea, transmitted through feces or saliva, treatment is aggressive fluid therapy, often fatal (canine vaccine) |
| Parainfluenza or Bordetella | causes coughing and sneezing, transmitted through nasal secretions, antibiotic treatment helps speed recovery (canine vaccine) |
| Leptospirosis | causes kidney and liver disease, transmitted through water contaminated with infected urine, many infections go unnoticed, severe infections can be fatal (canine vaccine) |
| Corona Virus | causes vomiting and diarrhea, transmitted through infected feces, most dogs recover without treatment, fatal to puppies (canine vaccine) |
| Lyme | causes fever and joint inflammation, transmitted through ticks, treatment with antibiotics is usually successful (canine vaccine) |
| Rabies | causes nervous signs, transmitted through a bite from an infected animal, treatment unsuccessful (canine and feline vaccine) |
| Canine Influenza | causes mild upper respiratory infection with coughing, transmitted in kennels, sometimes triggers high fevers and pneumonia, possible death (canine vaccine) |
| Panleukopenia | causes vomiting diarrhea, transmitted through exposure to contaminated feces, treatment is intensive, older cats survive, mainly kitten disease (feline vaccine) |
| Rhinotracheitis and Calicivirus | causes eye infections and sneezing/coughing, transmitted through nasal secretions, antibiotics help prevent further infection, kittens can die (feline vaccine) |
| Chlamydia | causes prominent eye infections and sneezing/coughing, transmitted through nasal secretions, antibiotic eye drops and sometimes oral antibiotics, not generally fatal (feline vaccine) |
| Feline Leukemia | causes lack of immunity and triggers tumor formation, transmitted between cats through bites and grooming, no treatment (feline vaccine) |
| Feline Infectious Peritonitis | causes fever and fluid accumulation in the chest and abdomen, mainly in breeding catteries. treatment not successful (feline vaccine) |
| Feline Immunodeficiency Virus | causes lack of immunity, transmitted between cats mainly through bites, can't be treated (feline vaccine) |
| Feline Bordetella | causes coughing and sneezing, transmitted through nasal secretions, antibiotic treatment helps speed recovery (feline vaccine) |
| Zoonosis (plural is zoonoses) | an animal disease communicable to man |
| Steroids | medications used to decrease inflammation and to relieve pain |
| Painkillers | non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) decrease inflammation |
| Water Pill | also known as a diuretic, they boost urine production, especially useful in heart disease |
| Antifungals | medications that kill fungi, used for yeast infections |
