| Adhesion | the attractive force that causes dissimilar molecules, surfaces, or substances to stick to one another |
| Cohesion | the attractive force that causes molecules or particles of the same substance to stick together |
| Polar molecule | A compound with one negatively charged side and one positively charged side. |
| Hydrogen bond | The side with the positive charge attracts the negative charge of a different water molecule. |
| Surface tension | the physical property of a liquid that makes its surface behave like a stretched elastic film, causing it to resist external forces and minimize its surface area |
| Capillary action | the spontaneous flow of a liquid through narrow spaces or porous materials without the help of external forces like gravity |
| Specific heat capacity | the amount of heat energy required to raise the temperature of a unit mass of that substance by one degree Celsius (or one Kelvin) |
| Expansion upon freezing | a substance increases in volume and decreases in density when it turns from a liquid into a solid |
| Universal solvent | a nickname given to water because it can dissolve more substances than any other liquid |
