| Adhesion | the tendency of dissimilar particles or surfaces to cling to one another |
| Cohesion | the act, condition, or force of sticking together to form a united whole |
| Polar molecule | a structure that has a slightly positive charge on one end and a slightly negative charge on the other end due to an unequal sharing of electrons |
| Hydrogen bond | a strong type of intermolecular attraction (or molecular interaction) that happens when a hydrogen atom covalently bonded to a highly electronegative atom |
| Surface tension | the physical property of a liquid surface that makes it behave like a stretched elastic film and resist external forces |
| Capillary action | the movement of a liquid through a narrow space or porous material against an opposing force like gravity |
| Specific heat capacity | the amount of heat energy required to raise the temperature of a unit mass of a substance by one degree Celsius |
| Expansion upon freezing | its molecules lock into an open, hexagonal crystal lattice that holds them farther apart than they are in liquid water |
| Universal solvent | dissolves more substances than any other liquid |
