Unit 1 topic 3 Vocab
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Adhesion | Water molecules stick to other materials |
| Cohesion | The occurrence of water sticking to other water molecules via hydrogen bonds |
| Polar molecule | A compound with one negatively charged side and one positively charged side |
| Hydrogen bond | The side with the hydrogen atoms (positive charge) attracts the oxygen side (negative charge) of a different water molecule |
| Surface tension | Water has a a thin "skin" on its surface due to the water molecules sticking togerther |
| Capillary action | Cohesion and adhesion work togerther to allow water to travel against gravity and move up a plant stem |
| Specific heat capacity | The amount of heat required to change the tamperature of a unit mass of a given substance by a amount (usuallly a degree) |
| Expansion upon freezing | As water decreases in temperature, the molecules move away from each other |
| Universal solvent | Wherever water goes, either through the ground or through living organisms, it takes along valuable chemicals, minerals, and nutrients |
