| adhesion | the attractive force that binds dissimilar molecules, surfaces, or cells to one another |
| cohesion | the tendency of similar molecules to stick together |
| polar molecule | a structure that has a slight positive charge on one end and a slight negative charge on the other due to an unequal sharing of electrons |
| hydrogen bond | a weak electrical attraction between a slightly positive hydrogen atom and a slightly negative atom like oxygen, nitrogen, or fluorine |
| surface tension | the physical property of a liquid surface that makes it behave like a stretched elastic film and resist external forces |
| capillary action | the ability of a liquid to flow through narrow spaces or porous materials upward against gravity |
| specific heat capacity | the amount of heat energy required to raise the temperature of a specific amount (usually 1 kilogram or 1 gram) of a substance by 1 degree Celsius |
| expansion upon freezing | because its molecules lock into an open, six-sided crystal pattern that takes up more space than liquid water |
| universal solvent | a liquid that can dissolve more substances than any other liquid |
