QuestionAnswer
What are the 5 different types of research design? Experimental, correlational, naturalistic observation, case study, and meta-analysis.
What is experimental research design? Establishes cause and effect relationship.
What is correlational research design? Identifies and measures the strength and direction of a relationship between two variables.
What is naturalistic observation research design? Observes subjects in their natural environment with no interference.
What is case study research design? It is an in depth analysis of an individual or small group.
What is meta-analysis research design? Combines and analyses the results of multiple existing studies on a single topic.
What is hindsight bias? The tendency to believe, after an event, that the outcome was predictable all along.
What is confirmation bais? The tendency to gather and process information that fits your belief. You ignore evidence against your belief.
What is overconfidence bias? The tendency to have excessive confidence in your knowledge, abilities, or accuracy.
What must good research have? A hypothesis, operational definitions, a theory, qualitative data, and quantitative date.
What are operational definitions? A measurable description of an abstract concept so it can be observed and tested in a study. Tells us what is being measured and how it is being measured.
What is qualitative data? Personal accounts, interviews, surveys, and documents.
What is quantitative data? Numerical or measurable data.
What is the one thing only experimental research has? Cause and effect.
What is the purpose of the independent variable in experimental research? It manipulates.
What is the purpose of the dependent variable in experimental research? It measures.
What is a confounding variable in experimental research? An outside factor that causes accidental manipulation of the data.
What is a control variable in experimental research? It keeps confounding variables to a minimum.
What are the groups in experimental research? Control group and experimental group.
What is random assignment? They are groups chosen by random from the sample. They reduce confounding variables.
What is population and sample in research? The population is everyone that can be part of the research, while the sample is a smaller portion in the experiment that represents the population.
What is generalization? It is the sample being applied to the population.
What is a single blind study? The subjects don't know what group they are in.
What is a double blind study? The researcher and participates don't know which people are in which groups.
What is a correlational study? It measures the strength of the relationship between two variables.
Correlation DOES NOT prove causation So no cause and effect :)
What is positive correlation? When both variables are increasing or decreasing.
What is negative correlation? When the variables are opposites.
What is random sampling? Taking a random survey from the population.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
