Unit 1 topic 3
vocab-Water
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Adhesion | Water molecules stick to each other materials |
| Cohesion | Water molecules stick to each other |
| Polar Molecule | In a Molecule, their is a positive charge on the side where the hydrogen atoms are and a negative charge on the other side, where the oxygen atom is a compound with one negativley charged side and one positively charged side. |
| Hydrogen Bond | Opposite electrical charges attaract, water molecules tend to attract each other making water "sticky". The side with the hydrogen atoms ( positive charge ) atttracts the oxygen side ( Negative charge ) of a different water molecule. |
| Surface Tension | Thin "skin" on it's sureface due to the water molecules sticking together. causing the water to clump together in drops rather then spread out in a thin film. |
| Capillary Action | Cohesion and Adhesion work together to allow water to travel against gravity and move up a plant stem. |
| Specific Heat Capacity | The amount of heat required to change the temperture of a unit mass of a given substance by a unit amount ( usaually a degree ). |
| Expansion Upon Freezing | An increase in volume with the same mass leads to a decrease in density. |
| Universal Solvent | Dissolves more substances than any other liquid . |
