Unit 1 Topic 3
Vocab - Water
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Adhesion | When water molecules stick to other materials. |
| Cohesion | Cohesion is when water sticks to other water molecules via hydrogen bonds. |
| Polar molecule | A compound with one negatively charged side and one positive charged side is called a polar molecule |
| Hydrogen bond | The side with the hydrogen atoms (positive charge) attracts the oxygen side (negative side) of a different water molecule. This is called a Polar Molecule. |
| Surface Tension | Water has a thin "skin" on its surface due to the water molecules sticking together. |
| Capillary action | Cohesion and Adhesion work together to allow water to travel up a plants stem. |
| Specific heat capacity | Water has a specific heat capacity, it is the amount of heat required to change the temperature of a unit mass of a given substance by a unit amount. |
| Expansion upon freezing | As water decreases in temperature, the molecules move away from each other. This causes an increase in volume which leads to expansion upon freezing |
| Universal solvent | Water is a universal solvent, it dissolves more substances more than any other liquid. |
