Unit 1 Topic 3
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Adhesion | Water molecules stick to other materials. |
| Cohesion | Water molecules stick to each other. |
| Polar molecule | A compound with one negatively charged side and one positively charged side. |
| Hydrogen bond | The side with the hydrogen atoms (positive charges) attracts the oxygen side (negative charge) of a different water molecule. |
| Surface tension | Water has a thin "skin" on its surface due to the water molecules sticking together. |
| Capillary action | |
| Specific heat capacity | The amount of heat required to change the temperature of a unit mass of a given substance by a unit amount (usually a degree). |
| Expansion upon freezing | As water decreases in temperature, the molecules move away from each other. This change causes an increase in volume. |
| Universal solvent | It dissolves more substances than any other liquid. |
