| Term | Definition |

| Polar Molecule | A compound with one negatively charged side and one positively charged side is called a polar molecule. |
| Hydrogen bond | The side with the hydrogen atoms (positive) attracts the oxygen side (negative) of a different water molecule. |
| Cohesion | The occurrence of water sticking to other water molecules via hydrogen bonds. Water molecules stick to each other. |
| Surface tension | When water has a thin skin on the surface due to molecules sticking together, this causes water to clump together in drops rather than out in a thin film. |
| Adhesion | This means that water molecules stick to other materials. |
| Capillary action | When cohesion and adhesion work together to allow water to travel against gravity and move up a plant stem. |
| Specific heat capacity | Specific heat is the amount of heat required to change the temperature of a unit mass of a given substance by a unit amount. (Usually degrees) Ex: (water can absorb a lot of heat before turning hot) |
| Expansion upon freezing | As water decreases in temp, the molecules move away from each other. This change causes an increase in volume, which leads to (term) . An increase in volume with the same mass. |
| Universal Solvent | Water is called a universal solvent because it dissolves more substances than any other liquid, this means whatever water goes through ground or a living organism, it takes along valuable chemicals, minerals, and nutrients. |
