| Adhesion | Molecules stick to other materials |
| Cohesion | The occurrence of molecules sticking to other molecules via hydrogen bonds |
| Polar molecule | A compound with one negatively charged side and one positively charged side |
| Hydrogen bond | A molecule with a positive charge attracts a molecule with a negative charge |
| Surface tension | A thin "skin" on the surface of a molecule due to molecules sticking together |
| Capillary action | When cohesion and adhesion work together to allow water to travel against gravity |
| Specific heat capacity | How much heat a substance can absorb before it starts to get hot |
| Expansion upon freezing | When a substance gets slightly larger when freezing because the molecules move farther apart |
| Universal solvent | Water is the universal solvent because it dissolves more substances that any other liquid |
