Water Vocabulary
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Polar Molecule | A compound with one positively charged side and one negatively charged side. |
| Hydrogen Bond | The side with the hydrogen atoms ( + Charge) attracts the oxygen side ( - Charge) of a different water molecule. |
| Cohesion | The occurrence of water molecules sticking to other water molecules via hydrogen bonds. |
| Surface Tension | Water has a thin "skin" due to the water molecules sticking together |
| Adhesion | When water molecules stick to other materials |
| Capillary Action | When Cohesion and Adhesion work together to allow water to travel against gravity and move up a plant stem. |
| Specific Heat Capacity | The amount of heat required to change the temperature of a unit of mass of a given substance by a unit amount. |
| Expansion upon Freezing | When water decreases in temperature, the molecules move away from each other. This causes an increase in volume. |
| Universal Solvent | Water is called a universal solvent because it dissolves more substances than any other liquid. |
