The Golden Age of Musical Theatre

Oklahoma! Rodgers and Hammerstein in 1943. First completely integrated musical. celebrated the American dream by reflecting American values and identity.
Richard Rodgers 1902-1979. Attended Columbia and what is now Julliard. Melodic genius. sophisticated yet accessible music. lyrical and melodic quality with emotional depth and elegance. worked originally with Lorenz Hart.
Oscar Hammerstein II 1885-1960. born to prominent theatre family in NY. attended Columbia. wrote lyrics connected to characters and their stories.
Collaborations of Rodgers and Hammerstein Oklahoma (1943), Carousel (1945), South Pacific (1949), The King and I (1951), The Sound of Music (1959)
Impact of the Golden Age Post WWII Americans were looking for hope, stability and safety, forming the American Dream. Musicals resonated with people living through post-war prosperity. solidification of character archetypes and integration of story, music and dance
