vocabulary stars and planets

TermDefinition
axis an imaginary line that runs through the center of the earth from the north pole to the south pole.
revolve to travel in a closed path around the sun.
orbit a objects path in space around another object.
moon a small plant-like body that revolves around earth rather than the sun.
phases as the moon revolves around earth, different amounts of its lit surface can be seen.
solar system is a group of objects in space that orbit a star in the center, plus the star itself.
planet is a large object that revolves around a star in a clear orbit.
dwarf planet also revolves around a star, but its path is not clear of other objects.
comet a ball of rock, ice and frozen gases.
star a huge ball of superheated gases.
sun a star that is at the center of are solar system.
constellation a group of stars that form an imaginary picture in the sky.
galaxy a huge system of gases, dust, and stars.
universe everything that exists in space.
