sectionalism placing the interests of ones own region or section ahead of the interests of the nation.

Adams-Onis Treaty (1819) Spain gives up Florida to the US and gives up its claims to the oregon territory
Problem with Missouri it would gradually free it's slaves
Missouri Compromise 36 latitude and above would be free; below would be slaves
The Monroe Doctrine The western hemisphere was closed to European Colonization and interface.
Election of 1824 John Quincy Adams becomes the 6th president.
Election of 1828 Andrew Jackson (cheese hater) wins by a landslide and becomes the 7th president.
Spoils System Jackson hired his own supporters to replace previous staff - fired nearly 10% of federal employees
Indian Removal Act Law required all Native Americans living east of the Mississippi River must leave their land and move to Indian Territory.
Trail of Tears Part of Andrew Jackson's Indian Removal policy. Native Americans were forced to march 22000 miles.
Worchester v. Georgia (1832) States did not have the right to impose regulations on Native American Land.
North (Tariff Issues) Favored high tariff (Factories)
South (Tariff Issues) Viewed potential tariff as an abomination (needed to export cotton cheaply)
West (Tariff Issues) Sided w/the North in tariff debate.
Nullification Crisis (John C. Calhoun) Calhoun argued States' rights and declared tax was null and void. Resulting compromise being reached, and Jackson reduced the tariff.
The Whig Party (Henry Clay) Supported the American System, Protective tariff, and internal improvements
North (economic) Based on industry and manufacturing
South (economic) Based on farming

Treaty of Guadalupe United States acquired New Mexico, California, and Arizona
Gadsden Purchase (1853) Established current borders of the lower 48 states
Significance of the Mexican-American War Established bad relations between the U.S. and Mexico
California Gold Rush Started in 1849. California joined the Union in 1850 as a free state.
Seneca Falls Convention 1848 First woman's rights convention held in the U.S. Published the declaration of sentiments
The Fugitive Slave Act Law required citizens to catch and return runaway slaves
Wilmot Proviso Wanted to ban slavery in any lands won from Mexico. (fails to pass)
Compromise of 1850 (Henry Clay) -California becomes free -popular sovereignty (voting) would decide the slavery issues.
Kansas-Nebraska Act (1854) Nebraska territory would be split into 2 territories. Idea was that one would be free state and the other would be slave state.
Bleeding Kansas -John Brown carried -Out a midnight execution -killed 5 pro-slavery settlers
Kansas becomes 34th state: Free
