TermDefinition
Heredity (nature) the genetic transfer of characteristics from parent to offspring
Environment (nurture) every non-genetic influence, from prenatal nutrition to the people and things around us
Genes the biochemical units of hereditary that make up the chromosomes --> 20,000 genes
Natural Selection traits that help organisms survive and reproduce in an environment are more likely to be passed on to succeeding genotypes
Evolutionary Psychology The study of how behaviors and mental processes present in the species today exist because they were naturally selected
Behavior Genetics the scientific study of how both genetic inheritance and environmental factors shape individual differences in behavior and psychological traits
Human Genome the complete instructions for making a human organism, consisting of all the genetic material in that human's chromosomes
Mutation a random error in gene replication that leads to a change
Monozygotic Twins a single fertilized egg that splits in two, genetically identical organisms
Dizygotic Twins separate fertilized eggs that share a maternal prenatal environment
Epigenetics the study of environmental influences on gene expression that occur without a DNA change
Nervous System the body's speedy, electrochemical communication network, consisting of all nerve cells of the peripheral and central Nervous systems
Nerves bundled axons of many neurons that form neural cables connecting the central nervous system with muscles, glands, and sense organs
Afferent Neurons send signals to brain (sensory)
Efferent Neurons move ---> signals from brain to muscle (motor)
Interneurons connects sensory and motor neurons
Sensory Neurons converts external and internal environmental stimuli into electrical signals and transmits them to the CNS
Motor Neurons transmit electrical signals to control all voluntary and involuntary muscle movements
Central Nervous System (CNS) brain and spinal cord --> decision maker, responsible for coordinating incoming sensory messages and outgoing motor messages
Peripheral Nervous System (PNS) sensory and motor neurons --> connects the body to the CNS by gathering information from the senses and transmitting messages from the CNS
Somatic Nervous System controls the body's skeletal muscles
Autonomic System controls the glands and the muscles of the internal organs --> automatically
Sympathetic Nervous System arouses the body, mobilizing its energy --> fight, flight, or freeze
Parasympathetic Nervous System calms the body, conserving its energy --> rest or digest
Reflex Arc the pathway that a reflex takes in the body

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
