IC3 Ch.6 Vocab.

QuestionAnswer
point of intersection exact coordinate (x, y) where both lines cross each other
systems of equations a set of two or more equations that share the same unknown variables, and a solution is the set of values that makes all the equations true at the same time
equal values method an algebraic way to solve a system of linear equations and find the exact point where two lines intersect without graphing
solution a value, or a set of values, that makes an equation, inequality, or system true when you substitute it for the unknown variables
substitute an algebraic way to solve a system of equations by isolating one variable and plugging its value or expression into the other equation
parallel straight lines in the same plane that are always the same distance apart and never touch or intersect
slope measures the steepness and direction of a line
y-intercept the point where a line or graph crosses the vertical y-axis on a coordinate plane
starting point it is the value of y when x = 0
growth rate measures how much a specific variable changes over a designated period, expressed as a percentage of its starting value
slope triangle right triangle drawn on a graph to help you find the steepness and direction of a line
lattice point a position in a coordinate plane or grid where all the coordinates are integers
similar triangles triangles that have the exact same shape—meaning their corresponding angles are equal—but they can be different sizes
proportional relationship a link between two variables where their ratio stays constant as they change
ratio a way to compare two or more numbers or quantities
constant of proportionality fixed ratio (k) between two quantities that change together in a proportional relationship y=kx
unit rate compares a quantity to one single unit of another quantity, showing how much of one thing exists for every 1 unit of another
y=mx+b slope intercept form where slope is (m) and the y-intercept is (b)
trend line a straight or curved line drawn on a graph or chart to show the general direction and pattern of data over time
scatterplot a type of data display that uses dots to show the relationship between two numeric variables
data set an organized collection of related data usually stored in tables, files, or digital records used for analysis
prediction uses numbers and formulas to estimate future events based on past data
independent variable a variable (often denoted by x ) whose variation does not depend on that of another
dependent variable a variable (often denoted by y) is the factor that you measure, test, or observe in an experiment to see how it responds to changes in another factor
two-way table grid-like charts used to organize and display data that fits into two different categories at the same time
categorical variable a data type that puts information into distinct groups or categories instead of measuring it with numbers
numerical variable a type of data that represents a measurable quantity or count, where the numbers carry a direct mathematical meaning
frequencies the number of times a specific value, event, or item occurs within a data set
relative frequencies the ratio of how many times a specific event or value occurs compared to the total number of trials or observations in a data set

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
