IC3 Ch.5 Vocab.

Question
(x,y) table two-column chart used to list pairs of related numbers, where the first column contains input values (x) and the second column contains output values (y)
pattern a predictable sequence of numbers, shapes, or objects that follow a specific rule
graph visual representations of mathematical relationships
rule to find the rule of a function by identifying the pattern or relationship between the input values (x) and the output values (y)
equation a mathematical sentence that shows two things are equal by using an equal sign
shift move the graph of a function up, down, left, or right without changing its basic shape or orientation
x-value a variable that represents an unknown input number x in (x,y) and known as the independent variable
y-value a variable that represents an unknown output number ( y ) in (x,y) and known as the dependent variable
y=mx+b slope intercept form where slope is (m) and the y-intercept is (b)
x-axis the horizontal number line on a coordinate plane
y-axis the vertical number line on a coordinate plane
growth rate measures how much a specific variable changes over a designated period, expressed as a percentage of its starting value
x-intercept the point where a graph crosses the horizontal x-axis, and it always has a y-value of zero ( ? , 0)
y-intercept the point where a line or graph crosses the vertical y-axis, and it always has a x-value of zero (0 , ?)
starting value it is the value of y when x = 0
variable a symbol—usually a letter like x, y, or n—that acts as a placeholder for a number whose value is unknown or can change
coefficient a number that multiplies a variable in an algebraic expression
growth triangle right triangle drawn on a graph to find the slope of a line
trend line a straight or curved line drawn on a graph or chart to show the general direction and pattern of data over time
point of intersection the exact location where two lines, curves, or axes cross each other on a graph
solution a value, or a set of values, that makes an equation, inequality, or system true when you substitute it for the unknown variable
steepness measures how sharply a line or curve goes up or down on a graph

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
