| exponential decay | a process where a quantity decreases over time at a rate proportional to its current value |
| equivalent expressions | math expressions that look different but have the same value for any number you put in for the variables |
| base | In an expression like (2^3) (two cubed), the base is the main large number on the bottom |
| grow | when a value increases by a consistent percentage or multiplier over regular time periods, causing the growth to speed up rapidly. |
| shrink | can "shrink" or simplify exponents in math by applying basic rules like combining like bases, subtracting powers during division |
| numerator | the top number in a fraction that shows how many parts of a whole you have |
| denominator | the bottom number in a fraction that shows the total number of equal parts the whole is divided into |
| solution | a value, or a set of values, that makes an equation, inequality, or system true when you substitute it for the unknown variable |
| no solution | there is no single number or set of values you can plug into an equation or a system of equations that will make the statement true |
| infinite solutions | when any real number value substituted for the variable makes the statement true |
| zero pairs | a pair of two numbers or counters—one positive and one negative—that combine to equal zero |
| equivalent equations | different algebraic statements that share the exact same solution set |
| distributive property | multiplying a number by a group of numbers added or subtracted together gives the same result as multiplying each number in the group individually and then combining the results a(b + c) = ab + ac |
| like terms | terms in an algebraic expression that have the exact same variables raised to the same powers |
| variable | a symbol—usually a letter like x, y, or n—that represents an unknown or changing number |
| power | an expression that shows repeated multiplication of the same number--it combines a base number and an exponent |
| coefficient | a number that multiplies a variable in an algebraic expression |
