| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| bivariate data | a type of statistical data that involves two different variables measured together for each observation or data point |
| cluster | a group of similar data points or objects that are placed together because they share common traits or characteristic |
| coordinate plane | a flat, two-dimensional surface made by crossing a horizontal number line and a vertical number line |
| dependent variable | the factor that you measure, test, or observe in an experiment to see how it responds to changes in another factor |
| dot plot | a simple statistical graph that displays the distribution of a small data set by placing dots above a number line |
| histogram | a type of bar graph that shows how often numerical data falls into specific value ranges |
| independent variable | a variable (often denoted by x ) whose variation does not depend on that of another. |
| ordered pair | a set of two numbers written in a specific order inside parentheses, such as (x, y), used to locate a point on a coordinate plane |
| origin | the center of the coordinate plane, (0,0) |
| proportional relationship | a connection between two variables where their ratios are always equal, meaning one variable is a constant multiple of the other |
| quadrants | four sections of a coordinate plane created when the horizontal x-axis and vertical y-axis cross |
| reflection | a geometric transformation that flips a shape over a line to create a mirror image |
| rigid transformation | a geometric move that changes a shape's position or direction without changing its size or shape |
| rotation | a transformation that turns a shape or a point around a fixed point |
| scale | the set of numbers and equal intervals placed along the axes (x-axis and y-axis) |
| scatterplot | a type of data display that uses dots (often scattered) to show the relationship between two numeric variables |
| translation | a transformation that slides a shape or point a fixed distance in a given direction without changing its size, shape, or orientation |
| trend line | a straight or curved line drawn on a graph or chart to show the general direction and pattern of data over time |
| unit rate | compares a quantity to one single unit of another quantity, showing how much of one thing exists for every 1 unit of another |
| variable | a symbol—usually a letter like (x), (y), or (n)—that acts as a placeholder for a number whose value is unknown or can change |
| x-axis | the horizontal reference line on a two-dimensional graph or coordinate plane that runs from left to right |
| x-coordinate | the first number in an ordered pair (x, y) that shows the horizontal position of a point on a graph |
| y-axis | the vertical reference line on a two-dimensional graph or coordinate plane that runs up and down |
| y-coordinate | the second number in an ordered pair (x, y) that shows the vertical position of a point on a graph |
