N. American Cultures

TermDefinition
Artifact An object made or used by people in the past that can teach us about how they lived.
Drought A long period of time with little or no rain.
Wigwam A small, rounded home made from wooden poles and covered with bark, mats, or animal skins.
Longhouse A long wooden home that could house several families. Some Native American groups in the Northeast lived in longhouses.
Tepee A cone-shaped home made from long poles covered with animal hides. It could be taken apart and moved easily.
Igloo A dome-shaped shelter made from blocks of snow, traditionally used by some Inuit people, especially while traveling or hunting.
Potlatch A special gathering held by some Native peoples of the Pacific Northwest that included feasting, gift-giving, and ceremonies.
