| Term | Definition |

| Terrace | A flat area of land cut into the side of a hill or mountain. The Inca used terraces to grow crops. |
| Quipu | A system of knotted strings used by the Inca to keep track of information, such as numbers, goods, and taxes. |
| Hierarchy | A system that ranks people or groups from highest to lowest based on their power or importance. |
| Ayllu | A group of Inca families who lived and worked together and shared land and responsibilities. |
| Mita System | An Inca system that required people to work for the government for part of the year. They might build roads, farm, or serve in the military. |
| Distribute | To divide something and give it out to different people or places. |
| Mortar | A material used to hold stones or bricks together when building. |
