| Natural Rights | Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness (born human means you inherit these rights) |
| Social Contract | Implicit agreement to maintain social order |
| Popular Sovereignty | The people give the government power |
| Republicanism | The people and their elected representitives hold the power |
| State of Nature | Experiment that describes human existence and behavior before the creation of formal government, laws, and organized society. |
| Separation of Powers | Branches are legislative, executive, and judicial |
| Checks and Balances | Each branch influences the others |
| Inalienable Rights | Inherent freedoms belonging to every person that a government cannot take away or transfer |
