| Chinampa | A small, human-made farming area built in shallow lake water. The Aztec used chinampas to grow crops. |
| Dike | A wall or barrier built to control water and prevent flooding. |
| Absolute monarchy | A government in which one ruler has complete or nearly complete power. |
| Aqueduct | A structure built to carry water from one place to another. |
| Rigid | Very strict and difficult to change. For example, Aztec society had a rigid social class system. |
| Purchase | To buy something by paying money or trading something of value. |
