Competencies, Associations, and Settings for Technicians

American Association of Pharmacy Technicians (AAPT) First pharmacy technician association, founded in 1979
American Pharmacists Association (APhA) Oldest pharmacy association, founded in 1852
American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) Pharmacy association founded in 1942
American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) Model curriculum for pharmacy technician education and training A program that provides details on how to meet the ASHP goals for pharmacy technician training curricula
Board of Pharmacy (BOP) A state-managed agency that licenses pharmacists and may either register or license pharmacy technicians to work in a pharmacy
Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) A technician who has passed the national certification exam; the tech can use the abbreviation CPhT after their name
Closed-door Pharmacy Not open to the public; A pharmacy in which medications are called in from institutions, such as long term care facilities and are then delivered
Communication The ability to express oneself in such a way that one is readily and clearly understood
Community Pharmacy outpatient or retail pharmacy; serve patients in their community; consumers can walk in and buy OTC or prescription drugs
Competency The capability or proficiency to perform a function
Confidentiality The practice of keeping privileged customer information from being disclosed without the customers consent
Continuing Education (CE) Education beyond the basic technical education, usually required for license or certificate renewal
Hyperalimentation Parenternal (intravenous) nutrition for paitents who are unable to eat solids or liquids. Also known as total parenternal nutrition (TPN)
Inpatient pharmacy Pharmacy in a hospital or institutional setting
Licensed Pharmacy Technician A pharmacy technician who is licensed by the state board, licensing ensures that an individual has at least the min level of competency required by the profession, unlike a registered pharm tech
National Association or Boards of Pharmacy (NABP) National organization for members of state boards of pharmacy
National Health Career Association (NHA) Certification orgonization for a variety of health care carreers, including the Institute for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians (ICPT)
National Pharmacy Technician Association (NPTA) Pharmacy association primarily for technicians founded 1999
Nondiscretionary Duties Tasks that do not require professional judgement such as repackaging meds, managing inventory, filing automated dispensing machines, and billing
Outpatient pharmacy A pharmacy that serves patients in community or ambulatory settings
Parenteral medications a term most commonly used to describe medications administered by injection, such as intravenously, intramuscularly, intramuscularly, or subcutaneously
Pharmacy Technician Accreditation Commission (PTAC) Agency-formed partnership between ASHP and ACPE for review and accreditation of pharmacy technician education and training programs
Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) National board for the certification of pharmacy technicians
Proffesionalism Conforming to the right principles of conduct (work ethics) as accepted by others in the profession
Registered Pharmacy Technician A pharmacy technician who is registered through the state board of pharmacy; the registration process helps maintain a list of those working in pharmacies and may require a background check through the legal system; the registration process does not garun
The Society for the Education of Pharmacy Technicians (SEPhT) a national technician organization that offers tools and useful information used in training and education of students and current practicing pharmacy techs
Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN) Large-volume intravenous nutrition administered through the central vein (subclavian vein) which allows for a higher concentration of liquids
