Layers of the Earth

TermDefinition
Crust The outermost layer of the Earth • Thin and solid • We live on the crust! • Has rocks, soil, mountains, oceans, plants, and animals
Mantle • The thickest layer of the Earth • Made of very hot rocks • Some rocks melt into magma • Magma can rise and form volcanoes
Outer Core • Made of liquid iron and nickel • It is extremely hot • The moving liquid metal creates Earth's magnetic field • Lies beneath the mantle
Inner Core The center of the Earth • Made of solid iron and nickel • It is the hottest layer • Stays solid due to great pressure
